Sleep talking, as its name clearly states, is the act of speaking while sleeping. It is known as parasomnia. Parasomnia is an abnormal behavior occurring while one sleeps. Sleep talking is common, and not considered to be a serious medical issue.
The chatter can be a simple nonchalant conversation that is harmless, or they can be graphic. Listeners may find the talking offensive in some regards. Usually people who talk in their sleep, will speak for no more than thirty seconds at a time. There are some people who may speak more than others, or may do it multiple times a night.

Half of children from the ages of three to ten years old will carry on conversations while sleeping. Five percent of adults will continue to speak after going to sleep. Girls talk more in their sleep than boys. Experts believe that sleep talking may be inherited.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sleep Talking?
It is hard to tell if you have been talking while you sleep. Typically, someone will tell you if you were talking while sleeping. They will usually be able to tell you what was said, or they will complain that someone kept them up talking all night.
What Is The Cause Of Speaking While Asleep?
Most people believe that sleep talking occurs when they are dreaming. Scientists have determined that the chatter can happen during any sleep stage. They are not sure if the speaking is linked to nightmares. Sleep talking is normally a harmless thing. In some cases, it can signify a serious sleep disorder or health concern.
A condition known as REM sleep behavior disorder, or RBD for short, and night terrors are two types of disorders that can cause someone to shout out while they are sleeping. Night terrors, also referred to as sleep terrors, will involve thrashing, frightening screams, and kicking. Waking someone who is having a sleep terror is a challenging task. Children who suffer from sleep terrors will usually speak in their sleep and sleepwalk.
People suffering from RBD will act differently than those suffering with night terrors. A person with RBD will grunt, shout, and act out their dreams. The dreams that are acted out are usually violent in nature. Sleep talking may occur concurrently with sleepwalking, or with a sleep-related eating disorder.
Other circumstances that can cause someone to speak while sleeping are emotional stress, certain medication, fever, substance abuse, or a mental health condition. People who are speaking in their sleep and suffer from any of these conditions, should seek medical counsel.
How To Treat Sleep Talking
You should visit with a sleep specialist if you begin sleep talking as an adult, or if your speaking involves screaming or violent behaviors. If the chatter is interfering with your ability to sleep, you will need to speak with a sleep specialist in this circumstance also. If a child is speaking in their sleep, make an appointment with their pediatrician.
There are no medical tests that can diagnose a sleep talking condition. Your doctor may require you to take a sleep study or have your sleep recorded, if you exhibit signs of any other sleep related disorder. Treatment is rarely required for sleep talking. In severe cases, there may be another medical condition that is resulting in the problem. Speak with your doctor if your sleep talking condition becomes an issue, or interferes with your ability to sleep.
